Wellcome! The Department of Intensive Care Medicine of the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNH) includes the Intensive Care Unit; the cardiac catheterization for pulmonary hypertension unit; the Sleep Disorders Center; the post-ICU outpatient service; and the experimental Intensive Care Medicine laboratory.

The Intensive Care Unit is a mixed medical-surgical ICU with 12 beds. The closed ICU model of care is utilized at University Hospital of Heraklion. The full spectrum of ICU services is provided by specialty-trained intensivists who are present in the hospital 24 hours per day. The equipment of the ICU corresponds to the modern technology and includes sufficient monitoring and support systems for the critically ill. Additionally the ICU has developed and implements an electronic patient information system (ICUPIS). The ICU medical staff consists of 10 intensivists and 4 trainees in intensive care medicine. In addition fellows from others specialties are trained during their rotation.

The cardiac catheterization for pulmonary hypertension unit is the only diagnostic center for pulmonary hypertension in Crete and performs several catheterizations yearly. The Center for Sleep Disorders specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and performs polysomnography sleep studies. The post-ICU outpatient service follows patients after ICU discharge. The experimental Intensive Care Medicine laboratory is focused on the study of mechanisms of acute lung injury.
